Colonels Trip to the Box
Colonels Trip to the Box

By: Robert Barrilleaux, Jr.

It was a warm evening in early May, and a perfect night for baseball, as the Colonels baseball team took the field against LSU.  As the teams were preparing to begin the game, the Tigers took time out to honor there four seniors.  One of these seniors was the Tigers starting picture, Clay Dirks, #13, who led the Tigers for 6 2/3 innings before he received a very honorable round-of-applauds as he left Alex Box Field for the last time.

The Tigers started the scoring in the second inning as #18, Nick Pontiff, scored off of senior, Steven Broschofsky's, double. However, this would not go unanswered, as Nicholls' John Beauchamp, #6, hit a RBI single in the top of the 4th inning.

The Tigers showed an incredible since of calmness as they responded quickly in the bottom of the fourth inning, when first baseman, John Mayer, hit a monster shot to left field; a hit in which bounced off of the top of light pole on its way out the park (2 run hr.). Later in the 6th the Tigers started again when senior, Steven Waguespack of Thibodaux, beat out a usually sacrifice bunt and advanced Mayer to second.  After a sac bunt by the next batter, to move the runners to second and third base; #5, Chris Jackson stepped up to the plate and hit a 2 RBI single.

LSU finished their scoring when in the bottom of the eighth, #14, Shaun Ochinko; hit a three run home run to bring the score to 8-1.  Nicholls put two runs on in the top of the ninth, but the deliverance of these runs were slightly passed overdue.

When this game was all over the final was Nicholls 3 runs, 8 hits, and 2 errors; and LSU with 8 runs, 13 hits, and 0 errors. In the end this game showed to be a great night by the senior honorees of the Tiger baseball team.
