NSU Eliminated from Bellsouth Southland Conference Tournament

The Nicholls softball team's Southland Conference Tournament experience came to an end Saturday, as they dropped a 9-2 decision to Texas State at Demon Diamond.

After working out of a bases loaded jam in the first inning, starting pitcher Ally May wasn't as fortunate in the second frame. With the bases loaded and two outs, Kristen Gunter hit a grand slam over the left center field wall to make it 4-0.

Texas State (34-21 overall) added two more runs in the third inning on a Karen Taylor two-run shot off reliever Krystalin Ensminger.

Nicholls (23-33) scored its first run in the bottom of the fourth thanks to a Brandi Hahn single to right field that plated Teri Clouatre.

After Texas State put a three-spot on the board in the sixth, Nicholls answered back when Kodi Butler hit her first career homer to make the count 9-2. Ally May received the loss (7-9 overall) after working two innings and giving up four runs on four hits.

"Ally struggled tonight with her curveball," Nicholls coach Jenny Parsons said. "We just weren't in sync offensively and had a rough go of it."

Taking the win was Sarah Lancour. Lancour went the distance and allowed two runs on five hits with seven strikeouts. "We had a heck of a year," Parsons said. "We advanced to the tournament and won a game. I think there are a lot of positives we can point to heading into next season. I was proud of my whole team and especially my seniors. I was glad were able to make it back to the postseason tournament and get them (seniors) a win."
