Vandebilt Girls' Soccer falls short in Championship Match

By: Walter Broussard

Vandebilt's girls soccer team was fighting for the Division II Championship title Friday night, only to fall short despite their huge efforts.

The game seemed like it was going to be a defensive battle as the match did not see its first shot until nine minutes into the match.

Two minutes later, Vandebilt’s defense tried chesting a ball down, but it was stolen by Kellie Murphy of St. Thomas More who dribbled it and had a one on one with the goalie. She then placed the shot in the lower right hand corner of the net to put St. Thomas More up 1-0.

Catherine Thompson of Vandebilt had an answer though. In the 18th minute she dribbled through two defenders then placed a shot to the near post that sailed past the goalkeeper to level the score at one a piece.

Right before half, it looked like STM would go a goal ahead as they took a shot only to watch it hit the post and fly out for a goalkick.

At the beginning of the second half, It looked like STM was drawing ahead as the ball rolled into the back of the net, but was called back by the middle ref ruling that the goalie was interfered with, and a foul had taken place.

Kellie Murphy of STM blast a shot from 25 yards out in with only six minutes left in the game and watched it sail past Vandebilt’s goalkeeper to put them up 2-1 in the game. She answered again in the second minute of stoppage time when she placed a shot the hit the right post and spun into the back of the netm which gave STM the 3-1 win.

The Lady Terriers finish the season 21-6-2. St. Thomas More finish at 24-3-2.

The Boys Soccer team defeated East Ascention 8-0 Saturday night.
