Fisheries News: Winter months are great for Sheepshead fishing
Thursday, February 16, 2006 (592 reads)

Want to catch a mess of great-tasting fish right now?  Just stop at your nearest bait shop for a pound or two of market shrimp and be prepared for some non-stop sheepshead action.  A lead-head jig, tipped with market shrimp and bumped slowly on the bottom is the key to filling an ice chest with these tasty “Rondeau Sunbream”.  Sheepshead run 2-8 pounds, but can reach as much as 20 pounds. They are excellent table fare, but care must be taken when cleaning the fish due to their sharp spines.  I find it helpful to use thick gloves to minimize puncture wounds and to score the outline of the fillet on both sides with a hook-bladed carpet knife before using the fillet knife.  This keeps the fillet knife sharp.

Monday, October 30, 2006 (274 reads)

This week, action remains on South Terrebonne. Can they run through the regular season undefeated? The answer is, yes. Traveling to the 2-7 Terrebonne Tigers should be no match for the highly ranked South Terrebonne team.  They have only played one team who have not beaten by two touchdowns. So there eyes must be focused on the playoff season.

E.D. White is also trying to pull a sweep of there district. With only one game to play in district, they have yet to be defeated. However, the game of the week would have to be O P Walker at Vandebilt. Vandebilt is in a must win situation to keep there outlook for a playoff spot in good condition.

As we watch the football and volleyball season come to a close, we also have a few more opening. This week, soccer and basketball gets its tip/kick offs started. The season starts with many questions for these two sports. Will basketball provide more caliber action and attention from across the state again? Will soccer continue to provide good action for its freezing fans? Only time shall tell.

The Houma and surrounding area is represented by nine teams in Volleyball action. There is one question though, how did two teams from the same district get paired up in the first round of the playoffs? That is the main question being asked by most Volleyball supports out there. This week, Ponchatoula will travel to Assumption, Thibodaux travels to St. Joseph. Ellender will try to defeat Grace King in their home arena, Central Lafourche travels to take on #2 Mandeville, E.D. White will host West Feliciana, Vandebilt will travel to Chalmette, Morgan City will host Breaux Bridge, and Terrebonne hosts district foe H.L. Bourgeois.

Boys Basketball Starts District, Girls have three way tie.
Thursday, January 04, 2007 (318 reads)

In basketball action, district gets start on the boys side this week. Ellender, South Lafourche, and Terrebonne are all tied at 3-0 on the girls side. While their is still plenty to be determined in this sport with a long district season ahead, there is one thing that is for sure, there will be no rain outs!

Once again it looks like the rain may catch part of the soccer district match up Friday night, which has to make people wonder, how will they finish the season? With over half of district play gone, and some teams still needing to make up district games already, it can throw a hole into the standing near the end. The Terrebonne girls seems like they will run away with the title. On the boys side, South Terrebonne and Central Lafourche are both tied at 5-0, with a district game to make up against each other.

Basketball District Starts, Soccer Heats up
Wednesday, December 20, 2006 (247 reads)

Basketball turns to their district schedule in this week's action, as the race for the district title is heating up. Their are always front runners when you turn to the action, however, we will have to wait until district starts to see who they are on the boys' side.

In Soccer, two teams have set themselves apart from the action in both boys and girls action. In the boys, South Terrebonne and Central Lafourche look to be the front runners as they are the two undefeated teams in district play. Central Lafourche will host South Terrebonne Friday night at 7:00. This will be one of the most entertaining games of the season. The surprise on the boys side is Thibodaux. Thibodaux soccer program has started heading in the right direction as they have posted close losses with Central Lafourche and South Terrebonne, after having big losses to these teams in years past.

In girls action, Terrebonne and Central Lafourche seem to be battleing it out for the district title. These programs seem to compete year after year with each other, and this year is no different. Last year the scores of there games were 1-0, 0-0 (4-2 Pks) in favor of Terrebonne both times. Look forward to seeing that good match up once again.

Seperate the Pretender from the Contenders
Monday, January 08, 2007 (310 reads)

It is that part of the season where it is time for the District Pretenders to seperate themselves from the Contenders. While the Basketball race continues to be close, so does the soccer. The only district race that is not close is the girl's soccer race as #6 ranked Terrebonne Tigers are pulling away from the pack. The only real threat they will face is Central Lafourche, who they beat 3-0 in the first round.

While the race seems to be unclear, the skies are seeming to clear out the way so things can clear up in the district matches. Hopefully we shall see some more good match up as you take a week at this week's action!

Vandebilt Boy's Soccer in State Finals and Look to Make History
Wednesday, February 21, 2007 (269 reads)

After starting off as one of the favorites in Division II soccer, Vandebilt started 4-11-1 and was barely considered a top ten team by a lot of people in the state after their first 16 games. Vandebilt quickly turned their fortunes around though, and are now playing for their 5th title in the past 6 years.

Not only will Vandebilt be looking to take home the title, but if they do so, it will make history. No team, in any division, has ever won 3 consecutive soccer state championships. Many powerhouses such as Jesuit and Brother Martin have also had opportunities to do this, but never succeeded.

Continuing with the odd facts of this matchup, their opponent, East Ascension...

As the girl’s basketball playoff action is in full speed ahead, the boy’s playoff brackets were released today. Monday, March 12, 2007 (259 reads)

It was just last month when the Houma area saw two state titles enter its doors. The area’s school look to bring two more titles home in the upcoming weeks. After both E.D.White and Ellender’s boys basketball team took home a victory last week to make it possible.

Last month, the Ellender girl’s Basketball team defeated Southwood to be named the State Champions of Division 5A with the final score being 37-32. Ellender boy’s will be looking to match their state title on March 17. They got into this position with wins over New Iberia, Ruston, St. Amant, and Barbe. Many were writing Ellender off after their slight victory over Ruston in the Regional round, however, Ellender proved exactly why they deserve to be in the playoffs with a 68 to 43 victory over Barbe in the semi-final.

As prep sports continue, anticipated showers have already begin to cancel action for this week and the Central Lafourche Freshman Invitational tournament. While not all action this week will be canceled, it is always sad to see when athletic events get canceled as the athletes are hitting the training grounds very hard.

Softball action seems the way to go with 3 teams in district 6-5A tied at 6-2. So if you are looking for some good competition, you might want to check out the Terrebonne/Assumption match-up, as it promises to be a good game.

In baseball the district race is also unpredictable with only five games played, every team in the district already has a point in that dreaded L column. All indications point to them taking it down to the wire as well.

Ok, so maybe baseball or softball just is not your kids thing. That is not a problem. Thibodaux Recreation will also be having swimming lessons during the same time as baseball/softball registration.

District Frontrunners Yet To Come In Front
Monday, April 09, 2007 (263 reads)

If you like compittion, this district continues to show you why you like to follow prep sports in the Houma area. It is getting alte in the district season, and no front runners have came out ahead. Two teams are tied in both baseball and softball. In softball, HLB and ST are battling it out at the top with 3 losses each. In baseball, it will come down to the rival of Thibodaux and Central Lafourche. This parish rival last taken by CL will prove deadly if CL would take it again, giving them the tie breaker if both would finish with 2 losses. Currently they are both tied for first with one loss a piece.

Colonels Trip to the Box
Thursday, May 03, 2007 (313 reads)

By: Robert Barrilleaux, Jr.

It was a warm evening in early May, and a perfect night for baseball, as the Colonels baseball team took the field against LSU.  As the teams were preparing to begin the game, the Tigers took time out to honor there four seniors.  One of these seniors was the Tigers starting picture, Clay Dirks, #13, who led the Tigers for 6 2/3 innings before he received a very honorable round-of-applauds as he left Alex Box Field for the last time.

The Tigers started the scoring in the second inning as #18, Nick Pontiff, scored off of senior, Steven Broschofsky's, double. However, this would not go unanswered, as Nicholls' John Beauchamp, #6, hit a RBI single in the top of the 4th inning.
