Heart Walk raises awarness, funds

The local American Heart Association held its annual Bayou Region Heart Walk recently in Houma.heartexercise.jpg According to Kim Landry, Regional Director, 300 walkers from over 30 local companies participated in raising this year’s funds, which tallied over $45,500.

All proceeds will remain in the Houma area to fund research and education in the fight against heart disease and stroke in the community. Every day, over 2,600 Americans die from cardiovascular disease. Funds raised help fund research and education that ultimately save lives.

Kim said she was extremely happy with the turnout, and that events like this would not be possible if it were not for the generosity of the local community. Sponsors include: Urology Health Center, Terrebonne General Medical Center, Metro Preferred Home Care, South Louisiana Bank, SLECA, Wal-Mart, Hibernia National Bank, Occupational Medicine Services, Regions Bank, Troop C Troopers Association and V.V.T. – In Memory of Teddy Duhe’.

heartstart.jpgThe annual Heart Walk is planned on a 12-month timeline and is the Association’s premier event. Besides that, the “Red Hot in Hawaii” Social also brings in funds. That event is scheduled on May 4, 2006 and the Over & Under 5K Tunnel Run and Heart Health Expo are scheduled for March 11, 2006.

In an effort to bring awareness that heart disease is the No. one killer of women over the age of 25, the Heart Association is asking all companies/businesses to GO RED FOR WOMEN on February 3, 2006 which is their national “Wear Red Day.” Companies are asked to allow their employees to make a $5 donation to the Heart Association and wear red on that day.

Kim added that they are presently looking for companies that will “go red” by turning their landmark red on this day as well. Nationally, they turn landmarks such as Niagara Falls, the Empire State building, and Graceland. Interested companies should contact Kim at 985-232-4875.
