NICHOLLS ACCEPTING DONATIONS FOR SWANNER SCHOLARSHIP FUND

THIBODAUX – Nicholls State University is making sure the legacy of Norm “Big Boy” Swanner remains part of the university for years to come with the creation of a scholarship fund and a service award that bear the name of the late Thibodaux entrepreneur and legendary Colonels sports fan.

Swanner, who died last month of a heart attack, was well known in the Nicholls athletics community for his jambalaya at tailgate parties, his presence on the sidelines at Colonels football games and his financial support of student athletes. The former owner of Bubba’s II restaurant also co-founded the annual Sponsor A+ Scholar Wine and Food Tasting Extravaganza at Nicholls, which has raised more than $200,000 to fund scholarships for students who demonstrate leadership ability along with outstanding grades.

In honor of Swanner’s constant support over the years, the Nicholls Foundation is accepting donations for a scholarship fund that will continue Swanner’s tradition of generosity toward Nicholls students. The Norman Swanner Scholarship Fund will provide a permanent scholarship at the university once the fund reaches $10,000.

The Norman Swanner Community Service Award for Student Athletes will be presented to a Nicholls senior who has a minimum grade point average of 2.5 and is nominated by a Colonels coach for significant involvement in community activities. The university president will present a trophy to the winner each year at the annual athletics award banquet, and a plaque displaying the names of award winners will hang in Barker Hall on the Nicholls campus. The award will be funded by the Colonel Club and the Nicholls Foundation.

Donations to the Norman Swanner Scholarship Fund can be sent to the Nicholls State University Foundation, P.O. Box 2074, Thibodaux, LA 70310.
