Terrebonne General Medical Center Receives Program Recertification from AACVPR

Terrebonne General Medical Center (TGMC) is proud to announce the recertification of their Pulmonary Rehabilitation Services Program from the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR) National Certification Committee.

“Receiving this distinction signifies that our pulmonary rehab program met the criteria for AACVPR Program recertification,” explained Dr. Michael Hawthorne, medical director of the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Services at TGMC.   The recertification involved the committee reviewing all types of documentation from the program to ensure compliance with the national guidelines, explained Dr. Hawthorne.

The goal of program certification and recertification is to assure the facility is meeting the essential standards of care described in the 4th Edition Guidelines for Cardiac Rehabilitation and Secondary Prevention Programs. Each program is reviewed by the AACVPR State/Regional Committees, AACVPR National Certification Committee and the AACVPR Board of Directors for final approval. The committee then presents the hospital with a certificate.

The recertification from AACVPR is important because it demonstrates TGMC’s commitment to excellence in providing pulmonary rehab services for the people in our region.  It also is an honor to achieve this certification because TGMC is the only facility in the tri-parish region to receive the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Services Certification from AACVPR.

“First accredited in 1999, the pulmonary rehab program offers help for people who suffer from chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases such as asthma, bronchitis or emphysema or who often have frequent or lengthy hospital stays,” said Dr. Ralph Bourgeois, Pulmonologist on staff at TGMC.

Patients who participate in the program receive services performed by an interdisciplinary team of medical specialist whose goal is to control and alleviate the symptoms of respiratory impairment to the highest degree possible.  The team also teaches the patient self management skills which will allow independence in managing daily activities.
