CHILDREN’S PUPPET SHOW PART OF NICHOLLS FESTIVAL
A mixture of colorful hand puppets and lively music will help spread ecological awareness among children when puppeteer Karen Konnerth of New Orleans-based Calliope Puppets presents “The Fisherman and His Wife” Tuesday, April 4 in the libraries of Thibodaux and South Thibodaux elementary schools. The show is part of the eighth annual Jubilee: A Festival of the Arts and Humanities at Nicholls State University.
Konnerth first toured with the tale of the fisherman and his wife three months before the devastation of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Set in south Louisiana, the traditional Brothers Grimm tale depicts the wife who asks too much of the magical fish her husband catches. Dynamin hand puppets, live music and lively audience participation promote healthy understanding of the effects human decisions have upon the environment.
Konnerth designs and builds all her puppets and staging and brings to life a dazzling array of characters in large hand, rod and shadow puppets, as well as masks. She is a Louisiana State Roster Artist and has received a state fellowship in theater. She travels the state and region, regularly performing at schools, museums, libraries, theaters and festivals, including tours in Puerto Rico, Pakistan, Spain and Costa Rica.
The performances will be held at 9:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. in the Thibodaux Elementary School library at 700 E. Seventh St. and at 1:30 p.m. in the library of South Thibodaux Elementary School at 200 Iris St. Admission is free, but space is limited. Call Donna Bergeron at (985) 446-6116 to make reservations.
The events are part of Thibodaux Elementary School’s Reading Is Fundamental program, sponsored by the Thibodaux Service League, Preferred Pediatrics and The Center for Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine.
