The healthcare industry is experiencing a critical blood shortage as a repercussion associated with the storms last year in southeast Louisiana. 

Blood and blood products are usually supplied to area hospitals by outside providers.  These providers are having trouble keeping up with the need for blood.  In our community, at Terrebonne General Medical Center (TGMC) blood is supplied by an internal blood donor center that is usually able to keep up with the blood supply needed to take care of its patients.  Currently, Terrebonne General Medical Center, like the other medical centers in the region, is experiencing a blood shortage and is in need of all types of blood, especially Types O Positive and O Negative blood. 

“TGMC is one of the few hospitals in the area, which utilizes blood from their donor pool to provide for their patient base,” explained Phyllis Peoples, President and Chief Executive Officer at TGMC.  “Throughout the history of the donor center our community has been very receptive in donating blood to save lives; but due to an increase in blood usage and in patient volumes the increased need for blood is crucial at this time,” she stated.  She stressed that anyone who is able to donate blood to please do so.

Donating blood is safe, easy, takes about 40 minutes, and it could save up to 4 lives.  Blood donors can donate at The Terrebonne General Medical Center (TGMC) Blood Donor Center which is open Monday – Friday, 7:30 am until 3:30 pm and on Tuesday until 5:30 pm.

The TGMC Blood Donor Center is located on Belanger Street across from the parking garage in the Annex Building and convenient parking is available.
