WOMEN TO BE CELEBRATED AT NICHOLLS THIS MONTH
Nicholls State University will hold several events throughout the month of March in honor of Women’s History Month. They include:
· March 1 to 31 – Ellender Memorial Library hosts an exhibit titled “Women: Builders of Communities and Dreams” that highlights women who have made significant contributions to their communities or to the field of education on the second floor of the library. University Counseling Services presents a display about women who have contributed to the field of mental health at 224 Elkins Hall. Books featuring women in American history and politics are available in the University Bookstore in Bollinger Memorial Student Union.
· March 20, 1:30 p.m. – Tydell Nealy, outreach officer with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, will discuss how the EEOC deals with women’s issues and other workplace discrimination issues, sponsored by the Bonnie J. Bourg Lecture Series Committee and the College of Business Administration, in 220 Powell Hall.
· March 22, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. – At “Simple Steps for Women to Live a Healthy Life,” University Health Services will sponsor screenings to accurately and easily determine body fat using a handheld device for quick results, while health educators provide nutritional and health information in the Student Union lobby. Door prizes will be awarded.
· March 23, 10:30 a.m. – The Bonnie J. Bourg Lecture Series will feature Tammy Vidrine, a Nicholls alumna who recently published a book detailing the experiences of six Hurricane Katrina survivors. She will be joined in Talbot Theater by one of the survivors featured in her book.
· March 23, Noon – The Bonnie J. Bourg Lecture Series Luncheon includes speaker Tammy Vidrine and Dr. Bonnie Bourg, retired Nicholls vice president for Student Affairs, in the Plantation Suite in Bollinger Memorial Student Union. Admission is $12 and reservations must be made by noon on Monday, March 20 by calling (985) 448-4176.
· March 24, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. – Sponsored by the Louisiana Center for Women and Government, the Women’s History Month Luncheon will feature as keynote speaker Ann Silverberg Williamson, Louisiana’s secretary for the Department of Social Services, and the awarding of Woman of Achievement awards. Admission is $10.75 general public or $5.25 for Nicholls students. Tickets must be purchased by Monday, March 20 by calling (985) 448-4770.
· March 30 – At “The Engaged Mind Looks at Violence Against Women” poster session, sociology students will display posters illustrating their research on interpersonal violence, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Student Union lobby. From 9 to 10:30 a.m., the students will be on hand to answer questions about their research.
· March 30, 6:30 p.m. – A poetry reading in the Ellender Memorial Archives Room will feature poets Denise M. Rogers of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, winner of the 2004 Louisiana Literature Poetry Prize and a 2002 Louisiana Division of the Arts Fellowship, and Louis E. Bourgeois of Rust College in Holly Springs, Miss., a Custom Words Awards finalist for his poetry collection “Olga.”
