Bus. transition center opens at LA tech college Monday, October 03, 2005 (1010 reads)
Thibodaux and the Bayou Region – September 30, 2005 - A new business center has been established at the Louisiana Technical College, Thibodaux Campus to provide temporary work space for businesses displaced by the recent storms. The facility, known as the Business Transition Center (BTC) is a cooperative initiative between the Thibodaux Chamber of Commerce, The Louisiana Technical College (LTC) and the South Louisiana Economic Council (SLEC). The center is available at no cost to the businesses who are in need of the space. Any business from any affected area is eligible to utilize the center.

SBA launches GOLoan Program Tuesday, November 15, 2005 (1148 reads)
Small businesses in areas affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita will be eligible for a unique new U.S. Small Business Administration-backed loan of up to $150,000 that is being launched this week to help speed financing for recovery and rebuilding. The loans will be delivered through local banks and will be handled under an expedited process that can deliver a response in 24 hours or less.

CIS physician performs groundbreaking procedure Wednesday, November 30, 2005 (1085 reads)
Dr. Peter Fail, director of cardiac catheterization laboratories and interventional research for Cardiovascular Institute of the South (CIS) is among a selected group of physicians around the world to implant the MitraClip™ device, an implant designed to repair the mitral valve of the heart using a catheter-based procedure that is less invasive than traditional surgical methods.
The procedure was performed on November 10, 2005 in the cardiac catheterization laboratory at Terrebonne General Medical Center (TGMC) in Houma, La. as part of a clinical evaluation of the heart valve repair system (Evalve, Inc, Menlo Park, CA) for patients with mitral regurgitation (MR), the most common type of heart valve problem. It was only the 16th procedure to be performed as part of the Phase II study.

Local school receives local, national donations Monday, December 05, 2005 (1147 reads)
In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and Rita, many of us found ourselves out of place and most definitely uncomfortable. Well that is certainly an understatement for the staff and students of Grand Caillou Elementary. The entire school had anywhere from four inches to over five feet of murky water that spilled into the 80 year-old-school from Lake Boudreax and/or Bayou Grand Caillou.
Having flooded at least four times in at least 20 years, the staff and students would find themselves once again bouncing back with resilience; and with much appreciated help from many, some without recognition for thanks. “It was like everything suddenly appeared on our stage…we don’t even know where some of the donations come from,” said Principal Peggy Marcel.

Dana has been part of the TGMC team for 20 years, working in various departments such as: Critical Care, Case Management and for the past 5 years in Information Technology. Dana stated, “ I am honored to be named the January TGMC Employee of the Month. It is such a great feeling that my co-workers recognized all of my efforts.”

SBA Hurricane loans surpass $1.5 billion Wednesday, December 21, 2005 (1063 reads)
More than $1.56 billion in U.S. Small Business Administration disaster assistance loans have been approved for almost 23,000 residents and business owners affected by the devastating hurricanes that struck earlier this year. Loan approvals are averaging approximately $37 million per day in December, with $500 million approved in two weeks time.
“The steps we have taken thus far to enhance our loan processing capabilities are beginning to pay off, and the SBA is approving disaster loans at a near-record pace, despite the substantial hurdles caused by the damage and dislocation of these storms,” said SBA Administrator Hector V. Barreto.

Terrebonne General Medical Center hosted a reception “ Honoring Your Nursing Achievement” for the December 2005 nursing school graduates from Nicholls State University and faculty at NSU. The recent graduates were given the opportunity to meet the administrative team, nurse directors and recent nursing graduates working at TGMC. Graduates in attendance were also provided with information on the nationally recognized healthcare facility and the hiring process. Teresita McNabb, Vice President of Nursing Services at Terrebonne General stated, “We are always very excited to meet and talk with our future nursing staff. We would like to congratulate these students on their accomplishment and encourage them to join our incredible team of clinicians at TGMC.”

Hurricane Relief Fund for TGMC Employees Established Thursday, January 12, 2006 (912 reads)
A hurricane relief fund from contributions made by employees, and friends of Terrebonne General Medical Center (TGMC) was established in conjunction with the United Way to benefit TGMC employees. The United Way/TGMC Hurricane Katrina/Rita Employee Relief Fund raised over $15,000.00 and benefited sixteen employees who were affected by Hurricanes Katrina and/or Rita.
Employees received debit cards to assist in their cleaning and rebuilding efforts and some also received vacation time that was donated by their fellow co-workers.

NSU seeking government interns Friday, February 10, 2006 (911 reads)
Internship applications will be accepted through Friday, March 3 from university and college students who want to work at government agencies while earning college credit during the 2006 summer and fall semesters through the Louisiana Center for Women and Government at Nicholls State University.
Interns will be assigned to work four days a week in a public sector office, usually in Baton Rouge. Recent assignments have included the Republican Legislative Delegation, the Attorney General’s Office, the Board of Supervisors for the University of Louisiana System, and the Center is always searching for new government offices to place interns.

Keep the Beat” Bystander CPR classes free for public Thursday, March 02, 2006 (1346 reads)
Community-minded businesses and organizations from the area are co-sponsoring three “Keep the Beat for the Bayou Region” bystander CPR training events free to the general public in March. An event will be held at the Cotillion Ballroom at Nicholls State University in Thibodaux on March 4 with sessions at 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. There will be two additional events on March 11. The first will be at the Houma-Terrebonne Civic Center with sessions at 8 a.m., 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. The second event will be held at the Morgan City Municipal Auditorium, with sessions at 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.
“Keep the Beat” is a not-for-profit effort and is open to everyone 12 years and older. Certified CPR instructors will teach the sessions that will last approximately two hours each.

Grant Writing Workshop to Focus on Post Hurricane Needs, Other Saturday, March 04, 2006 (806 reads)
The Louisiana Division of Administration, State Grants Management Section, Nicholls Research and Sponsored Programs and the South Louisiana Economic Council are sponsoring a hands-on worskshop to assist Bayou Region organization learning the specific processes of writing a successful grant application. The workshop is being held in response the need among area organizations to secure funding for the growing number of necessary iniatives following last year's storms. The workshop will be directed by Ms. Rebecca Telford, Community Development Program Specialist, with Louisiana Division of Administration and Ms. Debi Benoit, Director - Research and Sponsored Programs, Nicholls State University and will include both instructional materials and hands-on grant research utilizing a Nicholls computer lab. Habitat Receives Truck Donation to Aid in Rebuilding Wednesday, April 05, 2006 (801 reads)
The road toward recovery in Lafourche and Terrebonne Parishs just got easier to travel, thanks to Nissan North America’s generous donation of two full-sized Titan trucks to Bayou Area Habitat for Humanity. The new trucks will provide another valuable tool in the rebuilding effort.
“We are proud to represent Nissan and grateful for their donation to our affiliate…we are so blessed to have so many volunteers from all over helping families get into their new homes, “ said Jeanne Autin, Executive Director. The truck donation is part of a larger gift to Habitat for Humanity International’s Operation Home Delivery program. Nissan is presenting 50 Titan trucks to Habitat and its affiliates in hurricane-affected areas. The retail value of the donation is more than $1 million.

Seven Fletcher students win drafting awards Thursday, April 06, 2006 (835 reads)
Seven Fletcher Technical Community College drafting students received notice of award winning submissions in the American Design and Drafting Association (ADDA) national contest. Of the thirteen submissions from the college, three participants received first place, two received second place, and two received third place awards. The competition drew over 160 submissions from high school and college students. The students are invited to attend the award ceremonies at the ADDA National Conference in Nashville, TN this May. The award winners are: First Place: Albert Lirette, Jr, in structural; Michael Seely, in civil; Danny Trosclair, in electronics; Second Place: Kyle Guillory, in technical illustration; Dyron Johnson, in structural; Third Place: Seth Aucoin, in structural; and Tony Cangelosi, in electronics.

Dr. Kenneth Klaus of Nicholls State University recently answered the call from VH1 to add a little Dave Matthews to the mix in lesson plans for America’s high school students.
Klaus’ regular duties as a professor of music and director of choral activities include schooling the voices of choral students at Nicholls. His latest project, however, allowed him to branch out a bit. Klaus wrote a set of three lesson plans for the “Storytellers” series that airs on cable television’s VH1, in conjunction with MENC: The National Association for Music Education. Music teachers across the nation record the “Storytellers” program and use the accompanying lesson plans in their classes. The program on the Dave Matthews Band aired Feb. 7.

The first CLI International Summit began on Thursday, Oct. 27 at Hotel InterContinental in Miami, Florida. This summit focuses on the interventional treatment of Critical Limb Ischemia (CLI). Hurricane Wilma forced the summit schedule to be slightly abbreviated, but Thursday’s agenda continued as planned. This inaugural summit was held simultaneously with the start of the annual New Cardiovascular Horizons (NCVH) conference, the fourth largest cardiovascular conference in America. |

ES&H Holds Replacement Blood Drive for Employee Monday, April 17, 2006 (874 reads)
ES&H Consulting Services, Inc. will sponsor a Replacement Blood Drive with Ochsner Blood Bank for employee Keith Long who is awaiting liver transplant surgery.
The drive will be held on Tuesday April 18, 2006 from 7:30 AM to 11:30 AM and 12:30 PM to 4:00 PM. It will be held in the main parking lot of ES&H’s Corporate Office located at 1730 Coteau Road in Houma.
Long has been diagnosed with Cirrhosis of the Liver and is awaiting liver transplant surgery. The surgery will require a major amount of blood replacement. On behalf of Long, ES&H is asking the community to please help by donating the gift of life.

Fiber-Optic Phone System at Cardiovascular Institute of the South is First of its Kind in Houma Monday, April 24, 2006 (886 reads)
Cardiovascular Institute of the South (CIS) recently incorporated a state-of-the-art telephone system into its communications network at the Houma location. The Tadiran Telephone system, installed by Alliance Communications, is the first fiber-optic digital voice circuit installed in Houma. This telephone system is based on military-spec design intended to keep the lines of communication open at all times. Besides being extremely efficient and dependable during the normal business day, this system will allow communication to continue in times of crisis, such as the aftermath of a hurricane.
The fiber-optic circuit is a direct connection to BellSouth; it has no electrical properties and is not vulnerable to electrical voltage loss, lengthy distances or exposure to water.

The Santa Clarita Valley Disaster Coalition sent 97,000 elementary school library books on a Camelot Moving Truck on Friday, headed for Houma, Louisiana, a town hit hard by Hurricane Rita. The books will restock six elementary school libraries in Houma.

The Better Business Bureau is deeply grateful to the men and women of the armed forces. While members of the military serve overseas protecting Americans, the BBB works on the home front to protect them against unsavory con artists. Too often, military families fall victim to unethical businesses seeking to take advantage of their steady paycheck, the absence of a family member serving overseas or their unfamiliarity with a new community.
To better assist military families with a variety of consumer related issues, the BBB system has launched BBB MILITARY LINE. Bureaus are partnering with the U.S. military to encourage service members and their families to use the programs and materials of the BBB system. Copy paper, markers, notebooks and pencils are just a few of the much needed items in the Lower Terrebonne Parish schools as a result of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Twenty-one schools were flooded after Hurricane Rita, effecting about 10,000 students.
Time Warner Cable spearheaded a drive for supplies that resulted in more than $4,000 worth of school materials and uniforms, which were distributed through Terrebonne Parish School Board, Dept. of Federal Programs. “We got a great response when we put the word out,” said Marketing Manager Michelle Pellegrin. “There were so many collections being taken up for everything from clothes to cleaning supplies, that we weren’t sure if everyone would be tapped out, but they weren’t.” |

Nicholls State University recently accepted $10,000 from the American Association of Drilling Engineers in support of the seven-days-on and seven-days-off petroleum services program, announced Dr. David Boudreaux, vice president for institutional advancement at Nicholls.
“The donation was given to the petroleum services program because it is a unique program that represents the oil industry of the Bayou Region,” Johnson Hale, director emeritus of the AADE board, said.

NSU Receives Nearly $300,000 from Board of Regents Friday, June 16, 2006 (904 reads)
Nicholls State University was recently awarded more than $290,000 in grants from the Louisiana Board of Regents of higher education to enhance undergraduate academic programs.
Nicholls received funding for nine proposals for the 2006-2007 fiscal year from the Board of Regents Support Fund. More than $21 million was distributed this year to colleges and universities statewide to fund educational and research programs.

Michael Lane Hawthorne, M.D., a Board Certified Pulmonary Medicine Specialist, was recently appointed to the active medical staff at Terrebonne General Medical Center (TGMC).
Dr. Hawthorne received his medical training from Louisiana State University School of Medicine in Shreveport, LA where he also completed his residency and internship at Louisiana State University Medical Center. He then completed a fellowship at Vanderbilt University School of Medical, where he studied and worked in the division of allergy, pulmonary and critical care medicine.

The healthcare industry is experiencing a critical blood shortage as a repercussion associated with the storms last year in southeast Louisiana.
Blood and blood products are usually supplied to area hospitals by outside providers. These providers are having trouble keeping up with the need for blood. In our community, at Terrebonne General Medical Center (TGMC) blood is supplied by an internal blood donor center that is usually able to keep up with the blood supply needed to take care of its patients. Currently, Terrebonne General Medical Center, like the other medical centers in the region, is experiencing a blood shortage and is in need of all types of blood, especially Types O Positive and O Negative blood.

The Electrician program and the General Education – Science and Math program recently received notification of awards for competitive Carl D. Perkins Leadership grants. The Electrician award of $49,269, submitted by project director, Mike Fanguy, proposes to provide students with a multi-sensory enhanced learning experience in the electrician program through the intensive use of computer software applications and relay logic trainers. The Anatomy and Physiology classes of the General Education program received an award of $49,695 submitted by project director Steven Lee. The project proposes to provide physiology students with an enhanced laboratory experience through the intensive use of Biopac data acquisition units, transducers, electrodes, and dedicated software to target muscular, cardiovascular, pulmonary function, and neurophysiologic aspects of human physiology.

Houma Civic Center Hires Familiar Face Tuesday, May 09, 2006 (963 reads)
The Houma-Terrebonne Civic Center announces the arrival of a familiar face to its staff. Lori Toups, formerly Lori Domingue, was hired as Marketing Coordinator for the Civic Center last week. The Houma native was previously the main News Anchor and Reporter for the local TV station, HTV, since October 2003. In that role, Toups was responsible for gathering, reporting, writing, producing, and broadcasting the daily newscasts to viewers in a four-parish area.
Since graduating from Nicholls State University with a Mass Communications degree in 1999, Toups has primarily worked in television news. Before returning to Houma, she worked as a News Producer at ABC affiliates, KAIT-TV in Jonesboro, Arkansas, and WGNO ABC 26 in New Orleans.

Terrebonne General Medical Center (TGMC) offered sneak previews of the new women’s center. “Before the facility was open to serve patients we wanted to allow the opportunity for our team of health care professionals as well as past and future board members who made this project possible to view the new state-of-the-art facility,” said Phyllis Peoples, President and Chief Executive Officer.
The Women’s Center broke ground and began construction in March of 2004. Total building cost was $15.9 million and equipment cost totals $ 5 million.

High school students graduating in 2007 can begin their university studies for a reduced price beginning this summer in the Nicholls State University dual enrollment program.
To earn college credits while still in high school, students need to be on track to complete the TOPS core curriculum and have either a 2.0 cumulative grade point average, or a 20 composite score on the ACT test or rank in the top 50 percent of their class. Students must also meet prerequisites for the course or courses in which they wish to enroll. Courses can be taken in any format, including on campus and online, during the summer, fall or spring semesters.

Swanner, who died last month of a heart attack, was well known in the Nicholls athletics community for his jambalaya at tailgate parties, his presence on the sidelines at Colonels football games and his financial support of student athletes. The former owner of Bubba’s II restaurant also co-founded the annual Sponsor A+ Scholar Wine and Food Tasting Extravaganza at Nicholls, which has raised more than $200,000 to fund scholarships for students who demonstrate leadership ability along with outstanding grades.

The national accreditation of the Nicholls State University Department of Mass Communication was reaffirmed recently by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications in St. Petersburg, Fla., during its annual meeting.
The council, which consists of representatives from a broad range of national and international associations, reaffirmed the department’s accreditation unanimously. The council acted upon the recommendation of its accrediting committee, which unanimously favored Nicholls reaccreditation when it met in Chicago in March.

About 335,000 people a year die of coronary heart disease without being hospitalized or admitted to an emergency room. That's about half of all deaths from CHD — more than 930 Americans each day. Most of these are sudden deaths caused by cardiac arrest. By having AEDs available in public places many more people will be saved from sudden cardiac arrest. Survival rates drop 10% for every minute that defibrillation is delayed.

TGMC Names Armstrong Daisy Award Recipient Thursday, February 22, 2007 (677 reads)
Nurses at Terrebonne General Medical Center are being honored with The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. This award is part of the DAISY Foundation’s program to recognize the super-human efforts nurses perform everyday. Mark Barnes and his family founded the award in 1999, and Terrebonne General Medical Center joins 37-other medical facilities honoring their nurses with this special award.
The TGMC January recipient is Toni Armstrong, RN from the Oncology Department. As a part of the TGMC team for 11 years, Armstrong began working in the patient supply department and then became a nurse extern. She became an RN after earning her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from Nicholls State University.
“It is nice to feel appreciation from our patients. Oncology patients go through so much, and they are so appreciative of everything we do,” said Armstrong. “They make you feel good.”
In attendance for the presentation were Armstrong’s family and co-workers, the TGMC Daisy Award committee, Teresita McNabb, TGMC Vice-President of Nursing Services and Linda Songy, TGMC Assistant Vice-President of Nursing Services.
This is one initiative of The DAISY Foundation, whose overall goal is to help fight diseases of the immune system. Additionally, DAISY has programs to help fund research to improve treatment and ultimately cure Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), contribute to bone marrow and blood drives and provide support for ITP patients and their families.

With this historical event for TARC, clients are able to learn skills in the community with the products they make and package on a daily basis. We are truly excited and proud to be part of the Cannata’s family.

Prominent Professor of Afro-American Studies to Lecture Tuesday, October 24, 2006 (708 reads)
Dr. Henry Louis Gates Jr., the noted Afro-American studies professor at Harvard University, will be the featured speaker Thursday, Nov. 9 at the Nicholls State University Fletcher Lecture Series.
Gates is one of the most well-known academics in the United States. He has chaired Harvard’s Department of African and African American Studies since 1991, expanding the department and its faculty, and is the W.E.B. Du Bois professor of the humanities and director of the W.E.B. Du Bois Institute for African and African American Research. He has held professional appointments at Yale, Cornell and Duke universities. In 1997, Gates was voted one of Time magazine’s “25 Most Influential Americans.”

McDemott Donates to Help Manufacturing Engineering Program Tuesday, May 08, 2007 (840 reads)
Thibodaux – J. Ray McDermott recently donated $7,000 to support the manufacturing engineering technology program at Nicholls State University and its students.
Dr. George Watt, associate professor and director of the manufacturing engineering technology program, said $4,000 will be dedicated to student scholarships. The remaining $3,000 will be used for program expenses.
“McDermott has been one of our industry partners from the beginning of the program. They were one of the businesses that initially requested the program and helped us to develop it. They’ve been very supportive throughout the entire process,” Watt said.

Scott Branting, MD, Board Certified Anesthesiologist Joins TGMC Active Medical Staff Friday, July 21, 2006 (982 reads)
Scott Branting, M.D., a Board Certified Anesthesiologist, was recently appointed to the active medical staff at Terrebonne General Medical Center (TGMC).
Dr. Branting received his medical training from Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans, LA. He completed his residency in anesthesia and internship in internal medicine at Ochsner Clinic Foundation. He then completed a fellowship in pain management at the Virginia Mason Clinic in Seattle, Washington.

Meningitis Vaccine to be Required Thursday, July 20, 2006 (816 reads)
All incoming Nicholls State University freshmen and students residing on campus, including those in residence halls and La Maison du Bayou, are now required to be vaccinated against bacterial meningitis according to state law.
Michelle Caruso, dean of Student Services, said Nicholls is waiting for additional guidelines from the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals to explain how the university should implement the new law. House Bill 768, which was signed this legislative session, requires the secretary of the Department of Health and Hospitals to submit policies, including an implementation schedule, to the Board of Regents by Aug. 1.

AJ Songe Named TGMC Volunteer of the Year Monday, June 25, 2007 (644 reads)
Mr. AJ Songe III, Terrebonne General Medical Center (TGMC) Volunteer Auxiliary President, was named Volunteer of the Year during the awards presentation at the 2007 Volunteer Banquet held in celebration of National Volunteer Week on April 20. Songe, a Houma native, gave over 1,230 service hours during his first year of volunteering at TGMC.

The services are provided at no cost to the companies through the Bayou Region Technical Asisstance Network, a service of the South Louisiana Economic Council, Louisiana Economic Development and the Louisiana Business and Technology Center.

GALLIANO BUSINESS DONATES $100,000 TO NICHOLLS CAPSTONE FUND Tuesday, April 15, 2008 (835 reads)
THIBODAUX – Edison Chouest Offshore, a vessel service company based in Galliano, La., recently donated $100,000 to the Nicholls State University College of Business Administration.
The gift will supplement the Capstone Fund, a permanent endowment established in October 2006. The interest earned from the endowment will be used at the discretion of the dean, under the direction of the college’s executive advisory board, to address the college’s greatest needs – including student development, scholarships, faculty/staff development, equipment and software.

Chevron Donates $70,000 to Bayou Habitat Monday, August 07, 2006 (762 reads)
The Bayou Area Habitat for Humanity (BAHFH) received a $70,000 contribution from Chevron Corporation to build the first home in South Lafourche for a Hurricane affected family.
Chevron – including its share of equity affiliates – is among the largest publicly traded integrated energy companies in the world in net proved crude oil and natural gas reserves. Chevron Corporation has a shorebase located in Leeville and hopes this contribution demonstrates the way in which the industry family is taking action to support the community. Chevron employees have also stepped up by volunteering on Habitat’s construction site. Terry Autin, a Health, Environmental and Safety Representative for Chevron recruited several employees working on the Tahiti project out of Houston, Texas to volunteer on site as part of a team-building project.

LSU Professor Emeritus to Deliver Economic Outlook Friday, October 06, 2006 (709 reads)
Dr. Loren Scott, Professor Emeritus in Economics at Louisiana State University, will deliver his annual, Louisiana Economic Outlook report for 2006-2007 on Thursday, October 12 in the Cotillion Ballroom of the Bollinger Student Union at Nicholls State University. The much anticipated economic forecast will address critical economic issues such as the impact on the economy Post-Katrina and Rita, jobs growth forecasts and the implications of new offshore oil discoveries in the Gulf of Mexico. The first 200 attendees will receive a bound copy of the report for the Bayou Region and the State of Louisiana.
According to Vic Lafont, Executive Director of the South Louisiana Economic Council, “There is still a great deal of uncertainty about the affects of the storms on our economy. Dr. Scott was the first to provide our area with some clarity on what we would be facing when he addressed our area in November of last year. Now almost a year later, we have the benefit of Dr. Scott’s analysis of both the opportunities and the challenges we will be facing in the years ahead.”

ELTON LANDRY NAMED TGMC VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR Thursday, May 29, 2008 (395 reads)
Mr. Elton Landry was named the Terrebonne General Medical Center (TGMC) Volunteer of the Year during an awards presentation at the 2007-2008 Volunteer Banquet held in celebration of National Volunteer Week. Landry, a Houma native, was one of the top ten volunteers in 2007 to volunteer the most hours with over 945 service hours. Overall Landry has volunteered 3,575.30 hours at TGMC.
“Volunteering is something I love to do which is obvious because I do it four days a week. I enjoy volunteering because I know I am helping people out, plus it is keeping me healthy,” said Landry.

SBA Reaffirms Open Reinstatement Policy for Cancelled Gulf Coast Borrowers Sunday, August 12, 2007 (1215 reads)
Today the U.S. Small Business Administration reaffirmed that borrowers impacted by Hurricanes Katrina, Rita or Wilma whose loans were cancelled may request reinstatement until January 31, 2008.
“SBA is continuing to work hard for the Gulf Coast’s recovery,’ SBA Administrator Steven Preston said. “As part of the agency’s effort, we’ve taken extraordinary steps to ensure disaster loans are available to all eligible borrowers, two years later.”
SBA has attempted to get in touch with all borrowers whose loans were cancelled last fall without prior contact by the agency, and will continue its outreach. The agency encourages Katrina, Rita and Wilma borrowers whose loans have been cancelled to contact SBA’s Customer Service Center if they would like the loan to be reinstated.

The Terrebonne General Medical Center (TGMC) OutReach Center will host a free program on Women and Heart Disease Wednesday, Feb. 28, at the OutReach Center located in Southland Mall in recognition of American Heart Month.
Dr. Jody Stagg, Cardiologist with the Cardiovascular Institute of the South, will give expert advice on identifying the early warning signs of heart disease, which is the leading cause of death among women. Heart disease killed almost 500,000 women in 2003; comparatively, all forms of cancer combined killed under 300,000.

Teresita McNabb, RN, MSHSA,CNAA,BC, Vice President of Nursing Services and Cindy Hitt, RN, BSN,CRRN, Nurse Director of 5N (Medical/ Surgical Unit) were recipients of Excellence Awards from the Xi Zeta Chapter, Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing at Nicholls State University Department of Nursing.
Mrs. McNabb was awarded the Nurse Leader Award. She has been an integral part of the TGMC team for over 22 years. Currently, she is the Vice President of Nursing Services and has served as Assistant Vice President of Nursing Services and has held various leadership positions in the Critical Care Department from staff nurse to Director of the Critical Care Unit. Mrs. McNabb holds certifications in advanced cardiac life support, critical care, trauma, certified nursing administration advanced, and advanced child life support. Some of her professional affiliations include Region III Healthcare Consortium, American College of Healthcare Executives, and being a member of American and Louisiana Organization of Nurse Executives.

Miller earned a Licensed Practical Nurse degree from Louisiana Technical College, and Associate and Bachelor of Nursing degrees from Nicholls State University. She later received a Master of Science in Nursing degree from the University of Phoenix.

YEATES NAMED TGMC CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER Thursday, May 29, 2008 (985 reads)
Diane Yeates has been named Chief Operating Officer at Terrebonne General Medical Center (TGMC). Yeates has been a valuable member of the TGMC team for over 19 years. She has served in previous leadership capacities at the hospital which include Director of Budget and Reimbursement and Director of Patient Financial Services. Most recently, Yeates has served as TGMC’s Chief Financial Officer since 2002.
Yeates earned a Bachelor of Science in Accounting degree from Southeastern Louisiana University, and Master’s of Business Administration from Nicholls State University. She has also been a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) since 1987 through the state of Louisiana.
In her new role, Yeates will be responsible for growth initiatives of the organization, overseeing operational functions of the facility, and maintaining necessary relationships with the administrative team, board members, and physicians to assure high-quality operations.

NICHOLLS RECEIVES NEARLY $100,000 FOR PETROLEUM EDUCATION Friday, May 30, 2008 (823 reads)
THIBODAUX – Representatives of the American Association of Drilling Engineers presented an $80,000 check to Nicholls State University’s petroleum services program Thursday, May 29.
Dr. Badiollah Asrabadi, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and distinguished service professor of mathematics, said the funds will be used to create the AADE Computer Simulation and Distance Learning Center – wherein petroleum services students will have access to 32 new computers, industry simulation software and streaming video capabilities for distance learning.
“We expect that this donation will greatly improve the quality of education, increase students’ access to state of the art technology and help meet the non-traditional working students’ scheduling needs,” Asrabadi said.

SBA Honors Henry L. Coaxum Jr. For Outstanding Disaster Recovery Effort Wednesday, March 26, 2008 (762 reads)
Henry L. Coaxum Jr. owners of Coaxum Enterprises, Inc. lost three of his New Orleans area McDonald’s restaurants, an office complex and his own home to Hurricane Katrina in August 2005. The care, concern and innovation that Coaxum displayed in getting his employees back to work in the aftermath of the worst natural disaster in U.S. history, and his tireless devotion to the rebuilding of New Orleans’ business sector has earned him the 2008 Phoenix Award for Small Business Disaster Recovery.
The award will be presented during the U.S. Small Business Adminstration’s (SBA) National Small Business Week 2008, to be held in Washington, D.C. and New York City April 21-25.
